Marlin fishing Costa Rica

Marlin fishing was amazing this year off Costa Rica’s beautiful pacific coast! We added up around 200 releases of Blue Marlin about 20 Black Marlin and well over 1000 Sail fish to sum up our 6 month season December through May!

Blue Marlin like this are caught several ways by our team off the warm water of Quepos Costa Rica.  We sometimes slow troll live baits like bonita, sardines, blue runners and sometimes look downs to entice these Blue Marlin to eat! The most traditional way down in Costa Rica is to pull ballyhoo that are dead and rigged with a chin weight.  Another way have had lots of success with Marlin when we need to cover ground is pulling plastic lures! We travel long distances all day at around 10-11 knots covering ground trying to find a bite

This Blue Marlin is in the 200-250 pound range and was released unharmed !

Costa Rica fishing for Bait

Catching bait in Costa Rica and Panama can be the easiest thing on this list of things to do for the day of fishing or it can be a night mare ! We do a lot more live baiting in Panama because of the amount of Black Marlin throughout the region of the Hannibal Bank and the Island of Montousa we are much more equipped in the morning for live bait success! We have small spinning rods with chunks of ballyhoo on circle hooks ready to go, 30 lb tackle with giant hand made sabiki riggs ready for the morning trip out to the fishing grounds and we also have this little guy pictured here rigged on a 50w penn international! We rigg them on 50’s well…. because they also have caught wahoo, mahi mahi, tuna and large skip jack witch we like the most!  Both Costa Rica and Panama are great for live baiting so now a days we are always rigged and ready but, when it really comes down to it and the water is super clear and the sun is high this is our go to lure for the surface live baits. Small yellow fin tuna, big skip jack and bonita are our go to baits!  My favorite is the skip jack! Whenever we seem to have a healthy skip on the line for bait it seems to produce some sort of Marlin whether it be blue, stripe or black!  For this amazing product pictured here check out legendlures.com or Legend Lures on Facebook for more info about these lures and an enormous inventory of other lures for all kinds off offshore big game.  They have a countless selection of different heads and skirts to choose from for Marlin, tuna, sail fish, mahi mahi, Wahoo. Get back out on the water and dont leave the dock without a legend lure!

Quepos Sport fishing for Blue Marlin

Fishing this past season has been amazing for us out of Quepos, Costa Rica! We pulled a lot of lures and we had an amazing out come raising 25 Blue Marlin 6 Black Marlin and over 100 Sail fish un just a month of solid fishing! This is a underwater shot on the GOPRO!  We are taking a lot more pic this year and making sure our clients get them by email so they can enjoy their trip to Costa Rica! Blue Marlin like this are rare we usually get a shot a day or up to 10 a week depending on how much bait is around water temp and clarity of the water! We have had up to 10 shots a day and landed over 20 a week in past history! ” see past fishing reports” Black Marlin on the other hand I think are just as common but they don’t thrive on the surface as much as their counter [parts the Blue Marlin, Stripe Marlin and sail fish! And because we are usually trolling small live baits or dead bait we don’t see them as much but, on cloudy over cast days we have seem them more on the surface and have raised up to 6 in one day in the past!

We are closed as of now due to re-fitting the boat with a new generator, paint job and brand new Penn fishing gear! We look to reopen this November to be ready for our season of 2016-17!  We reside in Panama at this time but will be headed back to the beautiful Marina Pez Vela in late November to get started!

Although Black Marlin are not as common as there brother the Blue Marlin Mr Trigger has a unique style and gift when it comes time to targeting these monsters!! We average a few a week when targeting them in the months of December, July and August when the rains are slow but constant! Sport fishing out of Panama and Quepos Costa Rica gives us a ton of opportunities to target these amazing fish!

Sport Fishing Tuna Panama & Costa Rica

profilepic

Yellow Fin Tuna are in a huge abundance in the Costa Rica and Panama pacific waters and Mr Trigger splits his time in between both!  In Costa Rica we leave a little earlier than the other boats in the morning to catch those timid tuna first thing in the morning when they are on the surface and then the rest of the day we target them with small live baits or even chum for them!  In Panama we target them a little different. W leave just as early as in Costa Rica but we go for them with live bait the entire day looking for them on the surface and down deep!

Mr Trigger prides his self in targeting these Sail fish off Quepos Costa Rica.  For the months of December through April is an absolute amazing time to target Sail fish in Quepos. There are times when Mr trigger has released 70-100 in just 3 days and many other days we have raised 50 in a day.  Mr Trigger has raised them on lures and dead baits like ballyhoo but we have also gotten them chunking dead and live bait when they are around the surface.
